Growing up in New England I would have considered Ohio as the mid-west. Yet if I talk to native Coloradans, they would probably consider it an eastern state. It kind of depends on where your sitting at the time! Just due to relative population densities, I think there is sort of an eastern bias to the zones, except the West which has more of a SoCal bias. When I looked at the mid-western list a while ago, it seemed that "mid-west" kind of stopped at the Mississippi. I'm in Colorado and I don't particularly identify with the Western region (or the mid-western region) either. But part of the problem from the Club's point of view is that there just isn't enough participation in the regional forums to create new regional forums when the current ones aren't generating a lot of interest to begin with. The zones are just too big to be meaningful to those of us at the fringes in our regions and there aren't enough active members yet to warrant creating smaller regions. I do think it would be helpful if all the states were identified as belonging to one of the existing regions to reduce this kind of confusion though. And FYI, I'd probably put Texas in the Southern region, although having lived in San Antonio for 2 years, Texans really only consider themselves Texans and not Southeners.

OR, do as EXD does and just arbitrarily assign states to a region.

Network TV has the same problem. It's a "numbers" thing. BTW, if it becomes a Central region defined by time zone, most of the current members who look here would probably end up in the Eastern region as there are a lot of Michiganders and Ohioans who are in the eastern time zone. I think you would end up with a huge Eastern region stretching from the coast to Indiana and again, those at the western end would likely identify more with the Central region than the Eastern despite their time zones. I'm just not sure there is a good solution to this regional issue beyond, Pick the one you most identify with and "hang out" there!

Posts: 3658 (02/09/04 11:47:46) GT Club Moderator Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	excuse me for poking my new england ass into the midwesterner's forum, but i agree with oiml8, that most of the members (from other regions as well, not just the midwest) were early club members who for some reason never stayed with it. but my reason for posting here is because having this list may be an opportunity to rekindle early members' interest in the club. i'd bet that a lot of the early members opted out because the club hadn't reached a critical threshold of members to keep things lively. they probably read all the posts, rarely saw new threads, got bored, and never came back. they probably don't realize how much it's grown and how dynamic it really is now. if they were to receive a friendly email advising them to check out the forums again, they may be surprised and want to get back into it!

It's just a member list! Being a midwesterner and living in three midwest states, I can tell you that when you refer to "The Midwest" rather than a directional thang, these are the states that are in question: Minnesota, Ohio, Michigan, Nebraska, Iowa, Kansas, Missouri, Illinois, Wisconsin, and maybe the Dakota's... As for the region debate. Who cares? As stated before, pick a region you identify with and go for it. Eventually we will have a plethora of members and then we could branch out further. Nobody hardly posts in these forums anyways.... Oh, and I have for sure sent out emails to a lot of this list re-inviting them back to out great community here - apparently none have found their way here.... yet.... ****************************************************************************
